UPVC door lock problems: common fixes

UPVC doors are everywhere in newer Birmingham homes, and their multipoint locking mechanisms are generally reliable — until they aren't. Here are the faults we see most often, and roughly what's usually behind them.

The handle lifts but the door won't lock

This is almost always a gearbox issue inside the door edge rather than the handle itself. The gearbox drives the hooks and bolts around the frame, and once it wears out, lifting the handle no longer engages them properly. It's a straightforward gearbox swap in most cases.

The key turns but nothing happens

If the key spins freely without engaging the mechanism, the cam inside the cylinder has usually sheared, or the cylinder itself has failed. This is a cylinder replacement, and it's worth using an anti-snap cylinder while you're at it.

The door is hard to lock unless you lift and push at the same time

This points to the door dropping slightly on its hinges, misaligning the hooks with their keeps in the frame. Sometimes this is fixed by adjusting the hinges rather than the lock at all — worth having both checked together.

The key snaps in the lock

Usually a sign the lock has been under strain for a while before it finally gave way — worn pins, a misaligned door, or an old brittle key. We can extract the broken key and assess whether the cylinder needs replacing at the same time.

Locked out because the multipoint has jammed engaged

Sometimes the hooks throw but won't retract, leaving the door effectively locked from the inside with no way to open it. This needs careful mechanical work rather than force — pushing or pulling on the handle can make it worse.
