What to do when you're locked out

Being locked out is stressful, but a few quick checks can save you time and money before a locksmith even arrives.

1. Check every entry point

Before assuming the worst, check whether a back door, side gate or window has been left unlocked. It happens more often than people expect.

2. Don't force the door

Shoulder-barging a door or prying at a UPVC frame can damage the frame, the multipoint mechanism, or both — turning a simple lockout into an expensive repair. It's almost always cheaper to call a locksmith than to fix the damage from forcing entry.

3. Think about whether anyone else has a key

A neighbour, family member, letting agent or workplace key safe might solve the problem faster than any locksmith can.

4. Have your address and a description ready

When you call, having your exact address, the type of door or vehicle, and a contact number ready speeds things up considerably.

5. Ask about the price before work starts

A locksmith should be able to give you a clear idea of cost before starting, and explain if the price might change depending on what they find once they're on site.

What happens when we arrive

We'll assess the lock and try the least invasive method first. Most lockouts are resolved without any damage to the door. If the lock does need to be drilled, we'll explain why and quote for the replacement before doing it.
